One of the really cool things about having triplets is seeing their individual “spirits” and “iniquity” develop. At the same time, I notice similarities also developing. Take a look at this video….
Disclaimer - I know the plastic packaging is “not a toy” and should be “kept away from small children” . I was supervising.
Without a doubt, my girls seem to be a little more into “pretend” and “learning” play whereas my boy tends to be more into “rough” play and figuring out the mechanics of the world. I know I touch on this boy versus girl topic often but it is compelling to me, perhaps because I didn’t believe there was a major difference prior to having kids (your kids are wild…sure, blame it on them being boys). What does this mean? Men are better at changing the lightbulbs and women are better at keeping the house tidy…maybe. Honestly, it just makes me ponder on the impact of our evolutionary biology, our individual spirits, and our environment.
Alright, let’s be honest…I’m probably overthinking my son’s desire to repeatedly throw matchbox cars over the balcony. Any other mixed gender multiples out there? Do you notice any differences in play?

I TOTALLY see differences! I have BBG trips and no doubt, my girl is the calm one and can sit playing with Lego blocks for hours. The boys, however, climb on everything and have absolutely no fear!
I saw the differences with you girls and your brother growing up. You girls played dolls, dress up and the like and your brother was always playing cars, building Legos, and taking things apart to put them back together differently. There is a difference for sure. Gotta love em.
Oh, I wish I had mixed gender trips! I have 3 of Marcus
and I am exhausted.
They love to throw, tackle, climb, jump and destroy. It is amazing the destruction they can cause in a short time period. I would give anything to have a few minutes of girl playtime! Thankfully they do cuddle and kiss Mommy so I get a few minutes of love each day.
Karla, my trio is 9 days older than yours and I have been following your blog for the last few months. I love to read your posts as they are pretty close to what I am experiencing.
Lynne
Hey Karla,
I really notice the difference between my girls and my boy. Ian can sit and play with trains, trucks, and cars for HOURS…whereas the girls cannot be more obsessed with shoes, baby dolls, strollers and hats. I don’t feel like I fostered any of this…it is just hardwired in them! So amazing!
Well, you know all too well how wild my boys are (excuse or not, they just are). I second what Lynne says–it is amazing the destruction they can cause, and do cause, on a regular basis! On the other hand, they rarely cry when they fall, they don’t come running to me with friend drama, and they don’t care what clothes or shoes I put on them, so I am counting my blessings! God definitely made the two genders differently–we even asked Matt’s granny to get the boys baby dolls for Christmas one year just so we would not be a house devoid of dolls–the dolls became projectile missiles over the balcony!
there are definitely in-born differences.. my boys are much more into cars and trucks than my girl, she has no use for them. They ask to watch the movie “cars” all the time, while she asks to watch “Rachel” (Signing Time) all the time. On the other hand, my boys also love to push babies around in strollers and are very particular about their clothes.. hmm..
